History: From 1828 to 1963 wooden steamboats navigated the waters of Chautauqua Lake New York. While it is possible that some of the earlier steamboats were photographed, the steamboat images below start with what is currently believed to be the earliest steamboat to have been photographed, the "CHAUTAUQUA" Steamboat travel on the lake reached its peak in the late 1800's and then slowly declined until there was only one remaining... First named the "W.C. RINEARSON" in 1891, it was renamed the "CITY OF CLEVELAND" from 1892 - 1930. In 1931 it became the last large wooden steamboat on the lake and was renamed the "CITY OF JAMESTOWN". She made her final voyage in 1963. |

Special Thanks To: Victor Norton Jr. of West Ellicott NY for providing many of the images used for this page. Also special thanks to his father, the late Victor Norton Sr. who spent countless hours transposing information from early local newspaper articles to a typed page. I used these pages (somewhat condensed) to provide the history for each of the boats. |
